In the heart of a gentle valley to the south of Matane and La Mitis, La Matapédia RCM also opens its doors to the Gaspésie region. A population of more than 19,276 people (January 2009) resides in 18 municipalities in this RCM. Amqui and Causapscal are the two major service centers of La Matapédia RCM.
Given its abundant forests, it is no surprise that the main economic activity of the valley is tied to the exploitation of this natural resource. Agriculture follows closely behind and includes dairy, sheep and cattle farming. Mining in La Matapédia has exciting potential, in particular the mining of silica and gold.
The region also supports industrial activity which has given a new boost to the traditional sectors through an increase in processing. NATREL, ice cream producers, and UNIBOARD, manufacturers of particleboard, both export to foreign markets. Outdoor enthusiasts will find La Matapédia's natural setting and recreational facilities irresistible. Here, tourists can try their luck at salmon fishing on one of Quebec's most abundant salmon rivers.
